Austrian Science Fund FWF approves new artistic research project at JAM MUSIC LAB Private University for Jazz and Popular Music

The artistic research project What Are They Building In There? has been approved by the Austrian Science Fund FWF through its funding scheme for arts-based research, to be conducted at the Center for Artistic Research at JAM MUSIC LAB Private University for Jazz and Popular Music from 2026-2029. Considering the current approval rate of 7,1% in this funding scheme, the successful outcome underscores the academic relevancy of artistic research in jazz and popular music in general and the international leadership of JMLU's Center of Artistic Research in particular.

The project will explore group language, leadership and hierarchies in jazz and improvised music. It is led by Dr. Mark Holub who will be joining the university team for three years as Senior Postdoc after obtaining his PhD in Creative Music Practice from the University of Edinburgh. The project advisory board involves Univ.-Prof. Dr. Michael Kahr (JAM MUSIC LAB Private University), Univ.-Prof. Dr. Christopher Williams (Gustav Mahler Private University), Dr. Nikki Moran (University of Edinburgh), Prof. Raymond MacDonald (University of Edinburgh) and Dr. Sarah Harvey (University College London).
