JAM Students Alan Bartuš and Andreas Varady Win Top Prizes at the Carinthian International Jazz Award 2026

JAM MUSIC LAB Private University congratulates its students Alan Bartuš and Andreas Varady on their outstanding success at the 8th Carinthian International Jazz Award (CIJA) in Arnoldstein, Austria.

Following the final round on August 21, 2026, pianist Alan Bartuš was awarded first prize, while guitarist Andreas Varady received second prize. Jordi Roviro completed the podium with third prize and also won the Audience Award. 

The international jazz competition has supported outstanding young musicians since its foundation in 2018. Traditionally organized as a saxophone competition, the 2026 edition was open to all instruments in celebration of the centennials of jazz legends John Coltrane and Miles Davis. Each finalist performed at least one composition by Coltrane or Davis at the historic Klosterruine Arnoldstein in Carinthia.

Both winners made a strong impact on the Austrian and international jazz scene. Alan Bartuš won the Ö1 Jazz Scholarship in 2022, followed by Andreas Varady in 2023. The scholarships enabled both musicians to continue their artistic development through master’s studies at JAM MUSIC LAB Private University for Jazz and Popular Music Vienna.

The 2026 jury consisted of JAM Rector Marcus Ratka, Hans Lassnig-Walder, Nolan Quinn and Gilbert Waldner. Their decision once again highlights the exceptional artistic level, creativity and international potential of JAM students.
