In Memoriam – Gene Bertoncini (1937–2026)
It is with great sadness that we bid farewell to Gene Bertoncini, one of the most distinguished and influential jazz guitarists of his generation. The New York master of the nylon-string guitar uniquely blended jazz, classical music, and bossa nova throughout an extraordinary career, performing and recording with artists including Buddy Rich, Benny Goodman, Wayne Shorter, Tony Bennett, and Lena Horne, as well as appearing with the Tonight Show Band and the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra.
We had the great pleasure and privilege of welcoming Gene Bertoncini to JAM MUSIC LAB in Vienna for a memorable workshop several years ago. His exceptional musicianship, warmth, and generosity in sharing his knowledge left a lasting impression on our students and faculty alike.
We remember Gene Bertoncini with deep gratitude and admiration.
Thank you for the music, Gene. You will be deeply missed.
