Volodymyr Mazurika and Morvarid Tahmasebi participated at multimedia workshop in Italy
From February 9 to 14, 2026, Volodymyr Mazurika and Morvarid Tahmasebi, Media Music students at JAM MUSIC LAB Private University, participated in a one-week Erasmus multimedia workshop at the renowned Accademia Nazionale di Danza in Rome. The goal of the project was interdisciplinary collaboration: within a very short timeframe, dancers, choreographers, visual artists, and musicians worked together to create a comprehensive live performance. The rapid pace of the creative process was a fundamental part of the artistic experience.
Musical Contribution and Performance
In this project, Volodymyr Mazurika took on the role of a live musician performing in a trio. He performed on the synthesizer and electric piano, specifically using effects to create complex soundscapes and various atmospheric moods.
The musical concept was based on a modern exploration of the works of Miles Davis. The ensemble worked with reinterpretations of classics such as:
- All Blues
- Spanish Key
- In a Silent Way
A central element of his work was improvisation. This served as a bridge between the music and the dancers' movements, resulting in a dynamic and unpredictable interplay.
Artistic Development and Teamwork
For Mazurika, the greatest value of the week lay in building musical synergy with previously unknown artists. Since there was no established routine at the beginning, the "chemistry" within the ensemble had to be developed from scratch.
- Interdisciplinary Exchange: Through intensive rehearsals and dialogue about different artistic approaches, he learned to integrate the perspectives of other musicians, which helped him re-evaluate his own challenges in composition and performance.
- Awareness of Space: Working in a trio required a high level of sensitivity toward musical space. Mazurika had to constantly decide when to take the initiative and when to step back to leave room for the other performers.
- Real-Time Interaction: Since the structure of the performance was not rigidly fixed, tempo, dynamics, and transitions had to be felt intuitively in the moment.
Dialogue with Dance
The organic connection to dance was particularly influential. In moments of simultaneous improvisation, a direct dialogue emerged: the music reacted to the energy of the movement, while the dancers drew their dynamics from the sounds of the synthesizer and piano.
Impressions of Rome
Outside of the intensive rehearsal phases, the city of Rome provided an inspiring, albeit intense, backdrop. Mazurika described the atmosphere of the historic city as impressive, though he found the enormous tourist activity challenging—an environment he compared to a "buzzing beehive." Nevertheless, this change of scenery provided valuable creative inspiration.
Conclusion
The final performance at the end of the week impressively demonstrated how a complex live show can emerge within just a few days from almost nothing.
For Volodymyr Mazurika, the workshop was a significant experience for his personal and professional development. In addition to musical practice at the intersection of other art forms, he was able to strengthen his skills in team communication and rapid integration into new working environments—competencies that are of central importance for his Media Music studies at JAM MUSIC LAB Private University.
