Storytelling with Music – Workshop with Hollywood Composer Lawrence Shragge

On November 8, 2025, JAM MUSIC LAB Private University is proud to welcome multi-award-winning Hollywood composer Lawrence Shragge.

Born and raised in Montreal, Quebec, Shragge studied composition at the Berklee College of Music in Boston and the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY. Over the course of his career, he has composed the scores for more than 165 feature films, television productions, and documentaries, including the acclaimed production Anne of Green Gables. His work has earned him two Emmy Award nominations in the category Outstanding Music Composition.

As a longtime member of the Screen Scoring Faculty at the University of South Carolina (USC), Lawrence Shragge focuses on exploring the emotional power of music in film. His profound understanding of the relationship between image and sound has made him a sought-after mentor and teacher. Many successful Hollywood composers – among them Julia Newman, from the legendary Newman family – have been deeply influenced by his guidance and mentorship.

In this workshop, Shragge offers exclusive insights into his approach to musical storytelling through image and narrative. Participants will have the rare opportunity to receive direct feedback on their own compositions from Lawrence Shragge himself – an exceptional chance to gain inspiration, creative input, and artistic guidance from one of Hollywood’s great mentors.

As a creative starting point, participants will select an image – for example, from Midjourney.com, Pixabay.com, or their own collection – and translate its mood, structure, and visual elements into music. There are no stylistic limitations: anything is possible – film music, jazz, pop, or electronic, with or without vocals.

After the feedback session on November 8, participants will have the opportunity to revise and resubmit their compositions. Following the tradition of Music in the Woods (detailed info HERE), the best works will be awarded attractive prizes. In addition, workshop participants will have the chance to stay in contact with Lawrence Shragge and continue this artistic collaboration beyond the event.

This event is open for students of JAM, Gulda and also for participants who are not studying at our institutions.

Am 8. November 2025 begrüßen wir an der JAM MUSIC LAB Privatuniversität den mehrfach preisgekrönten Hollywood-Komponisten Lawrence Shragge.

Geboren und aufgewachsen in Montreal, Quebec, studierte Shragge Komposition am Berklee College of Music in Boston sowie an der Eastman School of Music in Rochester (NY). Im Laufe seiner Karriere komponierte er die Musik zu über 165 Spielfilmen, TV-Produktionen und Dokumentationen, darunter die preisgekrönte Filmrteihe Anne of Green Gables. Für seine Arbeiten wurde er zweimal für den Emmy Award in der Kategorie Outstanding Music Composition nominiert.

Als langjähriges Mitglied der Screen Scoring Faculty an der University of South Carolina (USC) widmet sich Lawrence Shragge der Erforschung der emotionalen Wirkung von Musik im Film. Sein tiefes Verständnis für die Verbindung von Bild und Klang macht ihn zu einem gefragten Mentor und Lehrer. In diesem Workshop gewährt Shragge exklusive Einblicke in seine Herangehensweise an das musikalische Erzählen von Bildern und Geschichten. Die Teilnehmer:innen haben die außergewöhnliche Gelegenheit, direktes Feedback zu ihren eigenen Kompositionen von Lawrence Shragge persönlich zu erhalten – eine einmalige Chance, Inspiration, Input und künstlerische Impulse von einem der großen Mentoren Hollywoods zu bekommen.

Als kreativen Ausgangspunkt wählen die Teilnehmer:innen ein Bild – etwa von Midjourney.com, Pixabay.com oder aus dem eigenen Fundus – und setzen dessen Stimmung, Struktur und visuelle Elemente musikalisch um. Dabei sind der Fantasie keine Grenzen gesetzt: Es gibt keinerlei stilistische Vorgaben – alles ist möglich, ob Filmmusik, Jazz, Pop oder elektronische Musik, mit oder ohne Gesang.

Nach dem Feedbacktermin am 8. November besteht die Möglichkeit, die Kompositionen zu überarbeiten und erneut einzureichen. Der Tradition von Music in the Woods (alle Infos zu dem Programm HIER) folgend, werden die besten Arbeiten mit attraktiven Preisen gekürt. Außerdem können die Teilnehmer:innen des Workshops mit Lawrence Shragge über diese Kooperation weiter in Kontakt bleiben.

An diesem Workshop können Studierende der JAM, Gulda und auch für externe Teilnehmer:innen mitmachen.
