JAM MUSIC LAB Private University has been authorised by the Austrian national accreditation agency, AQ Austria, to offer artistic doctoral studies in music (Doctor Artium).

In this information session, we will explain the specific opportunities this program offers for students of Gulda and JAM in terms of artistic and professional development.

1. What is an Artistic Doctorate in Music?

The artistic doctorate (Doctor Artium) differs fundamentally from a traditional, research-focused doctorate (e.g., PhD):

  • Core focus: Your own artistic project (e.g., as performer, composer, producer, improviser) forms the centre of your doctoral work.
  • Artistic research and reflection: Investigate, describe, and justify your artistic decisions using appropriate methods of Artistic Research.
  • Difference from scientific doctorate: Combines artistic excellence with critically reflected research from the perspective of artistic practice.
  • Contribution: Your project is an innovative contribution to socially relevant arts and demonstrates sensitivity to diversity, sustainability, and gender equality.

You obtain a qualification at the same academic level (third-cycle degree) as a scientific doctorate, but with a clear emphasis on artistic development and research.

2. Benefits for Musicians

An artistic doctorate is ideal for musicians who want to develop their artistic profile at the highest level without sacrificing practical work:

  • Deepen your work within your main artistic field (instrument/voice, composition, production, music education/IGP, media music, etc.).
  • Design an independent, multi-year artistic project with continuous professional feedback and structured supervision.
  • Obtain the highest academic degree in music while maintaining your artistic practice.

3. Career Perspectives and International Developments

A doctoral degree is increasingly important in music-related professions worldwide:

  • In many countries (USA, Asia), a doctorate is standard for senior teaching positions at universities and conservatories.
  • In Europe, the trend is similar: professorships and leadership roles increasingly require a doctoral degree.
  • Beyond performance and composition, a doctorate strengthens qualifications for roles in:
    • Music and cultural management
    • Marketing and advertising
    • Creative industries and media
    • Leadership positions in cultural and educational institutions

Long-term, a doctoral degree can be key for leadership positions requiring both artistic and academic competence.

4. An “In-House” Pathway from Diploma to Doctorate

For JAM and Gulda students, an efficient educational pathway is available:

  • Progress from diploma to Bachelor’s, Master’s, and doctorate within the same institution.
  • Recognition of non-formal achievements (CD productions, concerts, compositions) within legal possibilities.
  • Familiarity with lecturers, administrative processes, and infrastructure ensures smooth transitions.

5. Founding Scholarship for JAM and Gulda Students

A founding scholarship is offered for a combined Master’s + Doctor Artium package:

  • Reduces total tuition fees by 25%.
  • Supports students pursuing a continuous qualification pathway from BA/diploma through MA to doctorate.

This scholarship specifically supports your step into a long-term artistic and academic career.

Further information on admission requirements, application procedures, supervision models, and project structure will be provided during the information session and is available from the Study Office of JAM MUSIC LAB Private University.
