Vom 9. bis 14. März 2026 lädt die JAM MUSIC LAB Private University for Jazz and Popular Music Vienna zum internationalen Erasmus+ Intensivprogramm „New Standards – 101 Lead Sheets by Women Composers“. Das Projekt wurde federführend von Monika Herzig, Vizerektorin für Diversity und Internationalisierung der JAM, initiiert und konzipiert. Studierende aus vier Partnerinstitutionen arbeiten gemeinsam an Jazz-Kompositionen von Frauen, entwickeln eigene Interpretationen und präsentieren ihre Ergebnisse beim öffentlichen Abschlusskonzert am 13. März. Masterclasses, Workshops, Filmscreenings und Jam Sessions machen die Woche zu einer einzigartigen Mischung aus künstlerischer Praxis, Reflexion und internationalem Austausch.

Vom 9. bis 14. März 2026 veranstaltet die JAM MUSIC LAB Private University for Jazz and Popular Music Vienna das internationale Erasmus+ Blended Intensive Programme (BIP) „New Standards – 101 Lead Sheets by Women Composers“.

Das einwöchige Intensivprogramm bringt Studierende aus vier renommierten Partnerinstitutionen zusammen: dem Saint Louis College of Music, der Hochschule für Musik Saar sowie der Anderson University South Carolina School of the Arts. Gemeinsam widmen sich die Teilnehmer:innen einem künstlerisch wie gesellschaftlich hochaktuellen Thema: der Sichtbarkeit von Komponistinnen im Jazz.

Im Zentrum steht die Arbeit mit Berklee’s Sammlung „New Standards – 101 Lead Sheets by Women Composers“ – einer bedeutenden Repertoire-Erweiterung des zeitgenössischen Jazzkanons. In internationalen Combos erarbeiten die Studierenden ausgewählte Stücke, entwickeln eigene Interpretationen und präsentieren ihre Ergebnisse im Rahmen eines öffentlichen Abschlusskonzerts. Das Programm verbindet künstlerische Praxis mit Reflexion und Diskurs. Neben täglichen Proben umfasst das BIP:

• Austausch über historische, kulturelle und strukturelle Aspekte der Unterrepräsentation von Frauen im Instrumentaljazz

Höhepunkt der Woche ist das öffentliche Konzert am 13. März 2026, das live gestreamt und aufgezeichnet wird.

Mit diesem Erasmus+-geförderten Projekt setzt die JAM MUSIC LAB ein starkes Zeichen für Internationalisierung, künstlerische Exzellenz und mehr Diversität im Jazz.

Maja Jaku (JAM MUSIC LAB Privatuniversität)

Univ. Prof. für Jazz- und Pop-Gesang

Die in Mitrovica geborene Sängerin stammt aus einer traditionsreichen Künstlerfamilie und kam 1991 nach Österreich, wo sie ihr Studium an der KUG Graz bei Jazz-Größen wie Sheila Jordan und Mark Murphy absolvierte. Seit 2017 lehrt sie am JAM MUSIC LAB sowie an der Friedrich Gulda School of Music in Wien. Ihre pädagogische Erfahrung umfasst zudem Stationen an der New England Music Academy (USA) und internationale Workshops mit Legenden wie Joe Pass oder Wynton Marsalis.

In ihrer künstlerischen Laufbahn verbindet Jaku virtuos Jazz mit Neo-Soul. Nach ihrem Debüt Talking Jazzik (2002) und dem international beachteten Soul Searching (2022) markiert ihr neuestes Album „Blessed and Bewitched“ (aufgenommen in New York u. a. mit Johnathan Blake und Dezron Douglas) einen aktuellen Höhepunkt ihres Schaffens. Als feste Größe der europäischen Jazzszene gastierte sie auf bedeutenden Festivals von Wien bis Nashville und ist für ihre stimmliche Präsenz und emotionale Tiefe bekannt.

Monika Herzig (Vizerektorin JAM MUSIC LAB Privatuniversität)

Artistic Research und Klavier

Monika Herzig begann ihre internationale Karriere 1988 mit einem Stipendium an der University of Alabama. Nach ihrer Promotion in Musikpädagogik und Jazzstudien an der Indiana University lehrte sie dort drei Jahrzehnte lang. Heute ist sie sowohl Professorin für Artistic Research und Piano, als auch Vizerektorin für Diversität und Internationalisierung an der JAM MUSIC LAB Privatuniversität in Wien. Als angesehene Autorin und Herausgeberin publizierte sie Standardwerke über Jazz-Größen wie David Baker und Chick Corea sowie zur Thematik „Jazz and Gender“.

Künstlerisch blickt die Pianistin auf über ein Dutzend CD-Veröffentlichungen und weltweite Tourneen zurück. Sie trat auf renommierten Festivals auf und teilte die Bühne mit Acts wie Sting, Tower of Power oder Yes. Ihr international beachtetes Projekt „SHEROES“ vereint führende Jazz-Instrumentalistinnen und wurde vom DownBeat Magazine als eine der besten Veröffentlichungen des Jahres 2018 ausgezeichnet. Neben ihrer Lehrtätigkeit moderiert sie die wöchentliche Sendung „Talking Jazz“. Ihre Arbeit wurde vielfach ausgezeichnet, unter anderem durch die Jazz Journalists Association und das National Endowment for the Arts (NEA).

Nicolai Thärichen (Hochschule für Musik Saar)

Pianist, Komponist & Arrangeur

Der 1969 in Berlin geborene Nicolai Thärichen ist eine prägende Figur der deutschen Jazzszene. Seit 1999 leitet er sein renommiertes Ensemble „Thärichens Tentett“, mit dem er sieben Alben veröffentlichte. Sein Repertoire reicht von Jazz-Arrangements (z. B. Hendrixperience Orchestra) bis hin zu Kompositionen für die Dresdner Staatskapelle, Metallica und den Berliner Rundfunkchor.

Neben seiner Arbeit als musikalischer Leiter an Berliner Bühnen (u. a. Maxim Gorki Theater) widmet er sich intensiv der Lehre. Nach Stationen an verschiedenen Musikhochschulen und der Leitung des Berliner Jugend Jazz Orchesters ist er seit 2022 Professor für Jazz an der Hochschule für Musik Saar.

Ulrike Schwarz (Hochschule für Musik Saar)

Saxophonistin, Flötistin & Musikpädagogin

Ulrike Schwarz ist eine deutsche Musikerin, die sich an der Schnittstelle von Improvisation, Komposition und transdisziplinärer Performance bewegt. Ausgebildet an der Folkwang Universität der Künste (Klassische Flöte) und der HMT Leipzig (Master Improvisation), verbindet sie in ihrem Werk Einflüsse aus Klassik, Free Jazz und zeitgenössischer experimenteller Musik. Zu ihren aktuellen Formationen zählt das No Topic Trio; zudem kollaborierte sie mit namhaften Musikern wie Mariá Portugal, Anke Helfrich und Carl Ludwig Hübsch.

In der Lehre blickt sie auf eine langjährige Tätigkeit an der HfMDK Frankfurt zurück, wo sie unter anderem Jazz- und Improvisationsdidaktik unterrichtete. Seit 2022 ist sie Professorin für Musikdidaktik der Primarstufe an der Hochschule für Musik Saar. Ulrike Schwarz lebt in Frankfurt am Main.

Derick Cordoba (Anderson University)

Gitarrist, Forscher & Professor für Commercial Music

Derick Cordoba ist Direktor des Johnny Mann Center for Commercial Music und Assistant Professor für Musik an der Anderson University (South Carolina School of the Arts). Er unterrichtet Audioproduktion, Musikunternehmertum und Commercial Music und leitet das führende Commercial-Music-Ensemble. Seine Forschungsschwerpunkte sind Künstliche Intelligenz in der Musik, Crowdfunding in der Musikbranche sowie Sacred und Liturgical Jazz in den USA. Seine Dissertation „Liturgical Jazz: The Lineage of the Subgenre in the Music of Edgar E. Summerlin“ untersucht Ursprung und Entwicklung des liturgischen Jazz in den 1960er- und 1970er-Jahren. Seine Forschung präsentierte er u. a. bei Konferenzen der College Music Society, des Jazz Education Network und der International Association of Jazz Arrangers and Composers.

Als Gitarrist tourte Cordoba durch über zwanzig Länder und wirkte an mehr als zwanzig Aufnahmen mit. Als Mitglied von Further Seems Forever wurde seine Musik über fünf Millionen Mal gestreamt. Zudem leitet er eigene Instrumentalensembles. Sein Jazzalbum J&J erschien 2022; ein neues Instrumentalalbum ist für 2026 geplant. Er besitzt Abschlüsse der University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (DMA), der Florida International University (MM) und der University of North Florida (BM).

From March 9–14, 2026, JAM MUSIC LAB Private University for Jazz and Popular Music Vienna hosts the international Erasmus+ Intensive Programme “New Standards – 101 Lead Sheets by Women Composers.” The project was initiated and artistically led by Monika Herzig, Vice-Rector of Diversity and Internationalization at JAM. Students from four partner institutions collaborate on jazz compositions by women, create their own interpretations, and showcase their work in a public concert on March 13. Masterclasses, workshops, film screenings, and jam sessions combine artistic practice with reflection and international exchange.

From March 9 to 14, 2026, the JAM MUSIC LAB Private University for Jazz and Popular Music Vienna hosts the international Erasmus+ Blended Intensive Programme (BIP) “New Standards – 101 Lead Sheets by Women Composers.”

This intensive week brings together students from four partner institutions: Saint Louis College of Music (Italy), Hochschule für Musik Saar (Germany), and Anderson University South Carolina School of the Arts (USA), alongside participants from Vienna.

The programme focuses on repertoire from Berklee’s “New Standards – 101 Lead Sheets by Women Composers,” a landmark collection that expands and diversifies the contemporary jazz canon. Working in international combos, students rehearse, arrange, and interpret selected compositions, culminating in a public final concert.

The BIP combines artistic practice with critical reflection. In addition to daily rehearsals, the programme includes:

• Masterclasses in improvisation and rhythm section performance
• Ensemble coaching by renowned jazz mentors
• Workshops and film screenings
• Discussions on the historical, cultural, and social factors behind the underrepresentation of women in instrumental jazz
• Networking events and jam sessions

These are the tutors of the programme:

Maja Jaku (JAM MUSIC LAB Private University)

(Professor Jazz and Pop Vocals)

Born into an artistic family in Mitrovica, Maja Jaku fled to Austria in 1991, studying jazz vocals in Graz under icons such as Mark Murphy and Andy Bey. Since 2017, she has been a faculty member at JAM MUSIC LAB Private University and the Friedrich Gulda School of Music in Vienna. Her extensive teaching career includes tenures at the New England Music Academy (USA) and masterclasses alongside greats like Jon Hendricks and Barry Harris.

Jaku’s discography reflects a powerful fusion of Jazz and Soul, starting with her debut Talking Jazzik (2002) and continuing through high-profile releases with Universal Music. Her latest album, "Blessed and Bewitched" (recorded in NYC with renowned musicians like Johnathan Blake and Michael Rodriguez), showcases her evolution as a modern jazz stylist. A regular performer at international festivals from Vienna to Nashville, she remains one of the most compelling voices in the contemporary jazz and soul scene.

Monika Herzig (Vice rector JAM MUSIC LAB Private University)

Artistic Research and Piano 

Monika Herzig’s journey began in 1988 when she moved from Germany to the US, eventually earning a Doctorate in Music Education and Jazz Studies at Indiana University. After teaching there for thirty years, she now serves as Professor of Artistic Research at JAM MUSIC LAB Private University and , Vice-Rector of Diversity and Internationalization in Vienna. Her academic contributions include definitive books on David Baker and Chick Corea, as well as editorial roles for Routledge and IU Press focusing on jazz research and gender.

As a touring jazz pianist, Herzig has led groups across the US, Europe, and Japan, opening for legendary artists such as Sting, Tower of Power, and the Dixie Dregs. Her discography includes over 12 lead albums, most notably the "SHEROES" project, which features world-class female instrumentalists and earned a top spot on the DownBeat Best of the Year charts. A recipient of numerous grants (NEA, Chamber Music America) and a DownBeat Award winner, she also hosts the weekly podcast "Talking Jazz," continuing her mission of jazz education and performance on a global scale.

Nicolai Thärichen (Hochschule für Musik Saar)

Pianist, Composer & Arranger

Born in Berlin in 1969, Nicolai Thärichen is a versatile jazz musician and educator. He is best known for his ensemble "Thärichens Tentett," founded in 1999, which has released seven albums and performed worldwide. His diverse portfolio as an arranger includes projects for the HR Big Band, Metallica, and the Dresden Staatskapelle, as well as his own "Hendrixperience Orchestra."

Thärichen has served as a musical director for several major Berlin theaters and has taught at prestigious music academies across Germany. Since 2022, he has co-directed the Berlin Youth Jazz Orchestra and holds a professorship in Jazz at the Hochschule für Musik Saar.

Ulrike Schwarz

Saxophonist, Flutist & Music Educator

Ulrike Schwarz is a German musician working at the intersection of improvisation, composition, and transdisciplinary performance. Classically trained on the flute at Folkwang University of the Arts and holding a Master’s in Improvisation from HMT Leipzig, her work bridges the gap between classical music, free jazz, and contemporary experimental music. Current projects include the No Topic Trio; she has also collaborated with renowned musicians such as Mariá Portugal, Anke Helfrich, and Carl Ludwig Hübsch.

An experienced educator, she taught jazz and improvisation didactics at the Frankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts (HfMDK) for over eight years. Since 2022, she has served as Professor of Music Didactics for Primary Schools at the Saar University of Music (HfM Saar). Ulrike Schwarz is based in Frankfurt/Main.

Derick Cordoba (Anderson University)

Guitarist, Researcher & Professor of Commercial Music

Derick Cordoba is Director of the Johnny Mann Center for Commercial Music and Assistant Professor of Music at the Anderson University (South Carolina School of the Arts). He teaches audio recording and production, music entrepreneurship, commercial music, and directs the top commercial music ensemble. His research focuses on AI in music, crowdfunding in the music industry, and sacred and liturgical jazz in America. His dissertation, “Liturgical Jazz: The Lineage of the Subgenre in the Music of Edgar E. Summerlin,” examines the origins and development of liturgical jazz in the 1960s and 1970s. He has presented at major conferences including the College Music Society, Jazz Education Network, and the International Association of Jazz Arrangers and Composers.

As a guitarist, Cordoba has toured in more than twenty countries and performed on over twenty recordings. As a member of Further Seems Forever, his work has been streamed over five million times. He also leads his own instrumental groups. His jazz album J&J was released in 2022, and a new instrumental album is scheduled for 2026. He holds degrees from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (DMA), Florida International University (MM), and University of North Florida (BM).
