HÖR MA SICH – BREAKDOWN SESSION
How does an initial idea become a finished track? At the HÖR MA SICH – BREAKDOWN SESSION, students will gain a direct insight into real music production processes. Instead of discussing production in theory, artists DORAH and Philipp Melchers will open their original DAW projects and reveal how their tracks were created.
Behind the Tracks
Together with the artists, participants will explore the entire production process—from track structure, sound design and instrument selection to individual layers, arrangement, effects and processing. The artists will also discuss ideas they changed or discarded, explain the creative decisions behind their sound and answer questions from the students.
The workshop welcomes Grätzlsound, a Vienna-based association dedicated to supporting electronic music culture. The collective, whose team includes Antonia Kurz, Florian Bernhard and Oliver Gindlhumer, organises the regular “Hör ma sich” listening sessions at Vienna’s The Loft. Producers present their music, listen together and discuss the tracks openly with the community. The Hör ma sich Breakdown Session grew out of this collaborative format.
The workshop demonstrates that music production involves much more than technical skills. Every track is shaped by numerous creative choices. By comparing the different approaches of DORAH and Philipp Melchers, students can discover new production strategies, reflect on their own working methods and connect directly with active producers from Vienna’s electronic music scene.
