Saxophonist and Jazz Researcher Lukas Gabric Joins the JAM MUSIC LAB Faculty

International performer, Juilliard graduate and musicologist brings artistic and academic expertise to Vienna

JAM MUSIC LAB Private University for Jazz and Popular Music Vienna is delighted to welcome Dr. Lukas Gabric to its international faculty. The Austrian saxophonist, composer, researcher and educator will teach saxophone, ensemble direction and research.

Gabric has established an international career connecting jazz performance, music education and academic research. He holds a postgraduate Artist Diploma in Jazz Studies and Saxophone Performance from The Juilliard School and a PhD in Musicology from the City University of New York Graduate Center. His research focuses on jazz analysis, improvisation, music theory and the music of John Coltrane.

As a tenor saxophonist, Gabric has performed and taught throughout Europe, the United States, Asia and South America. His career highlights include reaching the semifinals of the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition, receiving the Best Soloist and Audience Choice Awards at the Getxo Jazz Festival and winning the ASCAP Herb Alpert Young Jazz Composer Award.

His discography includes more than 15 recordings and collaborations. In 2026, he released his latest album, In Flux, and received the Cultural Honor Medal of the City of Villach in recognition of his international artistic, academic and educational achievements.

Gabric also brings extensive experience in higher music education. He taught at The Juilliard School’s Music Advancement Program and the City College of New York and has served as Associate Professor at the Xinghai Conservatory of Music in Guangzhou. He is also the founder and director of the Carinthian International Jazz Award, which supports outstanding young jazz musicians from around the world.

At JAM MUSIC LAB, Lukas Gabric will combine professional jazz practice with research, improvisation and contemporary music education. His international perspective and experience as a performer, scholar and educator will provide valuable inspiration for JAM students.
