Tosca Music School Visits JAM MUSIC LAB: International Exchange in Music Education

JAM MUSIC LAB welcomed 18 music educators, including the headmaster of Iceland’s Tosca Music School, to Vienna on Wednesday, October 21, for a special curriculum study visit. As part of a week-long study trip, the visiting group explored JAM’s music education programs, teaching methods, academic curriculum, and innovative research activities.

The visit provided an opportunity for the Icelandic music educators to gain firsthand insights into higher music education at JAM, observe university classes, and exchange perspectives with academic representatives on different approaches to music teaching and learning.

Exploring Music Education and Academic Programs at JAM

The program began with an observation of Aaron Steiner’s pedagogy course, followed by a presentation from Vice-Rector Richard Graf, who introduced the curricular structure and academic programs of JAM MUSIC LAB.

Erasmus Coordinator Claudia Randles provided insights into international student exchange opportunities and funding programs, highlighting the possibilities for international academic cooperation.

Another key focus was JAM’s research in the field of Arts for Health, presented by Professor Oliver Graber. His presentation introduced new perspectives on the relationship between art, music, and health, highlighting the interdisciplinary potential of artistic practice and research.

Music Practice and International Collaboration

Following the presentations, participants engaged in a lively exchange of ideas on music education, academic structures, and potential future collaborations. A guided tour of the Gasometer offered the guests further insights into JAM’s facilities and working environment.

One of the highlights of the visit was observing David Dornig’s Large Ensemble rehearsal. This gave the visiting music educators an opportunity to experience practical ensemble work and musical collaboration within JAM’s educational environment.

Continuing the Exchange Beyond the Classroom

The professional exchange continued over dinner at Frau Mayer and during a concert evening at Jazzland, Vienna’s oldest jazz club. These informal encounters provided further opportunities for the guests and hosts to reflect on the day’s experiences, strengthen personal connections, and explore possibilities for future cooperation.

The study visit was coordinated and accompanied by JAM Vice-Rector Monika Herzig, who facilitated the exchange between the two music schools and helped establish a foundation for future meetings and collaborative projects.

The visit from Tosca Music School highlighted the importance of international networking, knowledge exchange, and mutual learning in contemporary music education. JAM MUSIC LAB welcomes this inspiring encounter and looks forward to the opportunities for continued collaboration between the two institutions.
