Language Certificates
Depending on your degree programme, applicants must provide proof of the required German and/or English language proficiency.
Please refer to the Language Requirements page to check the required language level for your programme.
Bachelor and Master Programmes
German Language Proficiency
Applicants may demonstrate the required German language proficiency by submitting one of the following:
Previous Education
- Secondary school leaving certificate from a German-speaking country or an Austrian/German school abroad
- German as an examination subject in the secondary school leaving examination
- Completion of Grade 8 at a German-speaking secondary school
- Completion of compulsory schooling (Grade 9) at a German-speaking school
- At least three years of studies at a German-speaking university
- At least three years of studies in German at a recognised university abroad
- Successful completion of the Vienna University Preparation Programme (VWU) in German at the required CEFR level

- Austrian German Language Diploma (ÖSD)
- Goethe-Institut
- University of Vienna Language Center
- TestDaF
- Vienna International University Courses
- Austrian Integration Fund (ÖIF)
- TELC
English Language Proficiency
Applicants may demonstrate the required English language proficiency by submitting one of the following:
Previous Education
- Secondary school leaving certificate completed in English
- At least three years of studies in English at a recognised higher education institution

- IELTS Academic
- TOEFL iBT
- Cambridge English Qualifications (B1 Preliminary, B2 First, C1 Advanced or higher)
- University of Vienna Language Center (English Certificate)
- TELC English
Artistic Doctoral Programme
Applicants for the Artistic Doctoral Programme must demonstrate C1 German or C1 English, unless German or English is their native language.
The required language certificate must be submitted at the time of the admission test or, at the latest, by the end of the first semester.
Applicants may provide proof by submitting one of the following:
Previous Education
- Completion certificate of a Diploma or Master's degree programme taught in German or English
- Diploma or Master's thesis written in German or English at a recognised university

- TestDaF (Test of German as a Foreign Language)

Accepted English Language Certificates
- University of Vienna Language Center (English Certificate)
- TOEFL iBT (minimum score: 95)
- IELTS Academic (minimum score: 7.0)
- TELC English
Important: All language certificates submitted for admission must not be older than two years.
