Artistic Research in Jazz: Positions, Theories, Methods

This research project explores the positions, theories, and methods of artistic research in jazz by establishing an in-depth discourse aiming at an understanding of the specificity of current approaches in the field.

The topics addressed throughout consider the cultural, institutional, epistemological, philosophical, ethical, and practical aspects of the discipline, as well as the influence of race, gender, and politics. Michael Kahr initiated the project at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Graz and has developed it since 2018 in collaboration with ten experienced artistic researchers, who serve in leading positions at established universities world-wide. Since 2019 the project has expanded further by connecting to the International Network of Artistic Research in Jazz (www.artisticjazzresearch.com).

A major contribution of the project is the first multi-authored volume on artistic research in jazz, scheduled to be published by Routledge in July 2021 (see https://www.routledge.com/Artistic-Research-in-Jazz-Positions-Theories-Methods/Kahr/p/book/9780367225957).
